Program Introduction

How the program works

This is a program by the students & for the students.

The program involves four parties:

  • individual students in China who are mostly in some of the poorest areas of the country and are in urgent need of financial support so they could continue and complete the basic education;
  • students in the US who commit to help their sponsored students in China by donating their own time working on appropriate household chores or other activities at home or school;
  • the parents of these US students who commit to contribute a fixed amount of money that is "earned" by their student children;
  • UWCCD who acts as an advocator for both the students in China and in the US, and a facilitator to help complete direct assistance and communication between and among the students, through this Internet platform and also traditional activities.

In a typical example, a student in the US commits to help a financially-disadvantaged student in China by raising money through his own efforts. For example, he could wash the dishes, vacuum the houses, or do bottle-sales periodically and earn a fee from his parents for each task completed.

Once the commitment is made by the student, the parents first contribute the pre-agreed amount of the money through UWCCD to the designated student in China and then supervise and encourage the student child to fulfill his/her commitment.

UWCCD would help forward the money to China, distribute the money based on pre-determined usage and provide accounting and feedback to the students/parents in the US. UWCCD would also periodically review the commitment fulfillment status with the sponsoring child and the parents.

The pair of students are also encouraged to communicate, directly or indirectly, to provide more motivation to the student in China and to develop more sense of responsibilities for the one in the US.

Every year, typically during the summer vacation, UWCCD will also organize students in the US to visit their partners in China.
